General Information

An Icosahedron is a geometric figure with 20 faces. Following is general information needed for making an Icosahedral Star from drinking straws. Step-by-step photos showing the major phases of making a star will follow.

  • 75 – Number of straws needed to make an Icosahedral Star.
  • 15 – straws needed; cut in half; 30 total; for the inner core.
  • 60 – straws needed for the 20 faces (3 straws/face).

7¾ inches is the length of standard-size drinking straws. Use standard length and same straws when you are in learning mode. You can use multi-colors & multi-patterns of straws once you have mastered the art of making a star.

Note: Be sure to use paper, non-bendable straws, as plastic straws will sag over time, and bendable portions of straws will need to be cut off.

Materials Needed

  • Paper Straws
    75, 7¾-inch, standard size
  • Needle
    5-inch, recommended
  • Thread
    Upholstery thickness, white
  • Scissors
    8-inch, recommended
  • Ruler
    As needed
  • Plastic Container
    To contain the above items
    Small Clip Box w/Snap-on Lid

Tips/Suggestions

Make a half-sized, paper-straw template to cut the 15 straws needed for the inner core. The easiest way to create a template is to fold the straw in half, then cut and re-mold.

Once you complete a star, be sure to reinforce each of the 12 nodes by tying/knotting thread to enhance the strength of the star.

Stars are not kid- or pet-friendly!! They make great mobiles!! ENJOY!!
